SportsBet to Extend its NRL Sponsorship
SportsBet is one of the biggest names in the online betting industry in the Australian scene, and the company has managed to extend its already existing sponsorship deal with the NRL (National Rugby League). The leading sportsbook in Australia has been able to hold off a challenge from Crownbet which was aiming to secure the NRL sponsorship deal, as it managed to extend the deal through a 60 million dollar agreement.
This deal is going to see that Sportsbet will remain the official betting sponsor and partner for the NRL, and this deal will remain in action until the year 2020. Sportsbet also has a2 year t-shirt sponsorship deal at AFL side, the Brisbane Lions. So Sportsbet is now the official NRL sponsor, on the other hand, Crownbet still has an ace up its sleeve as it is the sponsor of the AFL, this deal is purported to be equal 10 million dollars for every single season.
Some might believe that this deal has come in a critical time, as online wagering advertisements and promotions are being attacked, as was reported in earlier news. On the other hand, the NRL was smart and quick to state and assure the critics that a major part of the sponsorship deal include the implementation of safeguards that would prevent advertising to those who are of illegal age and children.
This was made clear through a statement from the commercial head of the NRL, Andrew Abdo. He said that one of the main factors of the agreement is that there are going to be controls that would restrict nay kind of wagering promotions to minors. In addition, Sportsbet is going to implement and fund a market leading responsible wagering program.
This is a great move because there are many reports that state that youngster gambling is a problem, this includes a report what was written for the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation 2 years ago which estimated that 50% of young Australians have gambled before they have reached 15 years old.
Gambling operators always state that they are not deliberately targeting kids, but the fact remains the same, that social media marketing for these companies use a lot of tactics that appeal to kids. For example, many companied who use social media for marketing like twitter, YouTube and Facebook use cartoon characters.
On the other side of the globe, there is not much worry regarding this issue, as according to some new figures, which was a part of the European Football Jersey Report, the sponsorship of sports team in Europe has increased 190% compared to the previous year. More than 42 million Euros was spent on these deals, making the gambling industry, the 6th highest industry when it comes to investments. Betting firms in Europe and in the UK are becoming very visual as they advertise in play betting during soccer matches and more.
